Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on the 24th of August 1972 at Long Beach California. DuVernay was introduced to the arts from her aunt Denise. Her aunt, a night-shift nurse, allowed her to explore art and literature as well as the theatre in daylight. DuVernay quickly fell in love after showing her that 1961 West Side Story film. DuVernay saw how art was an effective tool for promoting the cause of activism. DuVernay had an aunt who was socially conscious and taught her how to use the arts as a means of expression. DuVernay was raised in Compton with her parents however she was able to spend the summers in Lowndes County Alabama. This is where the family of DuVernay's father has lived for many generations. DuVernay's Father recalled witnessing the historic march of Civil Rights Movement on the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. DuVernay was influenced by her time in Selma to later direct the documentary of King's father, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In the year 1990, DuVernay completed her studies at Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. After graduation she was enrolled at her first year at the University of California Los Angeles where she earned certificates in English as well as African American studies. DuVernay started producing broadcast journalism when she was just a student. She worked as a CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembered being told to look at the trash of a jury member's home. Following her disappointment with journalism due to the work she was assigned and deciding to go after a career in publicity. DuVernay was hired straight after graduating from college as a junior publicist at an unassuming studio. The DuVernay Agency is her first PR agency. Her agency launched numerous lifestyle and promotion networks that include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
